Yes, really.
This week a new mid-range phone was introduced to the world, the Realme X. If you haven’t heard of the brand, it’s sort of a sibling of OPPO in that both companies come under DDK in China.
But what really interested us about this new range is that it has a couple of special editions… and they were inspired by onions and garlic. Okay.

According to Engadget, the finished products are the the result of over 300 prototypes and 72 gradient tests. They were also designed by Naoto Fukasawa, who is known for creating an infobar phone back in 2015.
Keeping with the trend of Oppo and Oppo-adjacent phones, the Realme X has a super interesting 16MP selfie camera, which pops out of the top of the device. It reminds me a bit a Samsung Note series S-Pen, but thicker.
At the rear you’ll find both a 48MP and 5MP camera that support 4K 30fps video as well as 720p 960fps slow motion capture. The device also has a 6.53-inch AMOLED display.
Once you peel back the layers (sorry not sorry) you’ll find a Snapdragon 710 processor, 4GB and 6GB RAM options with 64GB storage or 8GB RAM with 128GB storage.
On the battery front it has a 3,765mAH offering with Oppo’s 20W VOOC fast charging. And much like some of the flagships we’ve seen this year, it comes with an in-display fingerprint reader.
The onion and garlic editions of the Realme X cost 1,899 yuan, which is about $399 in Aussie dollars.
But sadly Realme doesn’t sell in Australia, so we will probably never see these garlic and onion bois on our shelves. And that’s a shame. Despite the odd inspiration and my subsequent urge to throw them in a stock pot, they’re super pretty and have some nice specs for a low to mid-range phone.
