Here is what to stream on Stan this Halloween.
iZombie
A clever and witty take on the horror genre, iZombie stars Rose McIver as medical student Liv Moore, who turns into a zombie and begins working at the coroner’s office. She inherits the memory of each corpse brain she eats, helping her solve crimes. There are four seasons to get your teeth stuck into on Stan, brought to you by the team behind Veronica Mars – Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright.
Insomnia
Filmed on location in Russia, this action drama centres around a deadly, illegal game. Players are injected with a drug that will kill them if they fall asleep. They are forced into a kill-or-be-killed game on the streets of Moscow, with only the last player standing getting the lifesaving antidote. The edgy plot and dystopian themes will keep you hooked.
Paranormal Activity
A young couple set up cameras in their home to catch a suspected supernatural presence. The seemingly straightforward premise went on to become a pioneer in the found-footage genre and one of the most profitable films ever – it grossed almost $200m from a shoestring $15,000 budget that only adds to the realism and raw terror of the final cut.
Scream
A classic franchise, Scream mastered the horror/humour mix that’s so prevalent today. A group of teens in a small town become the target of a killer, who dons the famous mask to stalk his victims. Paying homage to the genre while simultaneously subverting it in the most meta of ways, Scream also gave us appearances from era-defining stars like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and Drew Barrymore.
The Cabin In The Woods
As the title suggests, five friends go to stay in a remote cabin, where terrible things happen. However, far from being your standard horror plot, this Joss Whedon-produced movie constantly switches up the plot to keep you on your toes, with an irreverent undertone that smartly turns genre cliches inside out. Kristen Connolly and Chris Hemsworth star.
The Descent
If you’re claustrophobic, look away now! Six women exploring a cave hidden deep in the woods get trapped when a rock blocks their exit – but that’s only the beginning of their problems as an unknown force starts hunting them. It’s intense and gory, with precise directing from Neil Marshall and chilling performances from the all-female cast.
Supernatural
One of the most enduring fantasy shows of the last decade and still going strong, Stan has 12 seasons of Supernatural’s dark thrills and chills ready for your viewing pleasure. Two vigilante brothers fight all that’s evil in the world, meaning we meet plenty of monsters and demons along the way.
