iOS 11.3 was on March 29 and it’s reportedly screwing with the functionality of some iPhone 8s. Specifically, ones that have been repaired with third-party screens.
This isn’t the first time this has happened. Some users experienced similar issues with their iPhone 7s last year, again due to a software update. However, it was fixed within a week. Let’s hope that there is a speedy solution this time around too.
And let’s not forget that Apple was taken to court by the ACCC in 2017 over the “Error 53” messages that appeared on some iOS devices, informing users that the device had been bricked following unauthorised repairs.
The iOS 11.3 issues was originally reported by Motherboard, who spoke to the CEO of a US repair shop, Aakshay Kripalani.
“This has caused my company over 2,000 reshipments,” Kripalani told Motherboard. “Customers are annoyed and it seems like Apple is doing this to prevent customers from doing 3rd party repair.”
It seems that the microchip that powers the phones’ screens is what is causing the problem. Some third-party suppliers have reportedly already worked out how to fix it, but unfortunately for affected customers, that means booking in another repair that upgrades the chip.
Some may argue (Apple certainly does) that it’s in the customer’s best interest to only seek repairs from authorised repairers, citing the expertise and longevity. But there is a world of difference between encouraging customers to opt for Apple repair services, and repeatedly releasing updates that seem to actively punish those who have sought a different, and possibly more affordable option.
Opinions aside, all we can do now is wait and see what Apple do to address the issue, and hope that they fix it.
