Video: In Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Niimura’s comic book, I Kill Giants, it’s unclear just how much of young Barbara’s giant-slaying adventures are real and how much are part of an elaborate fantasy world she’s created in her mind to escape from the emotional stresses of her actual life. The new trailer for the film adaptation does a good job of getting that point across.

Your uncertainty as a reader is meant to reflect the uncertainty Barbara feels as she navigates the hellish landscape that comes along with being a misunderstood Year 5 student who just wants to lose herself in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. In RJE films’ upcoming adaptation of the comic, that same blurring of Barbara’s reality is still there, but it’s also amped up in a way that makes it even more difficult to separate fact from fiction. The first trailer for the film reveals that Barbara (Madison Wolfe) doesn’t just fantasise about felling gargantuan demons, she’s out in the wild actively hunting them with weapons.
But the trailer also gets into the stark contrast between Barbara’s perception of reality and that of those around her. Barbara can see the monsters coming to destroy her town and so can we, but I Kill Giants doesn’t at all seem committed to the idea that seeing should lead to believing.
I Kill Giants, directed by Anders Walter and also starring Zoe Saldana and Imogen Poots, hits US theatres March 23. An Australian release date has not yet been confirmed.
