Aquaman casts a big villain. Peter Capaldi discusses what sort of Doctor we can expect in his last season of Doctor Who. There’s good news for The Magicians and Shadowhunters. Plus, snazzy new Defenders art, a new Justice League poster, and set footage from the next Mission: Impossible movie. Spoilers get!
Aquaman
Dolph Lundgren has joined the cast. THR reports he’ll play King Nereus, who hails from the aquatic kingdom of Xebel, and has hopes to “claim Mera as his own and… to kill Aquaman.” Which I’m sure will go down splendidly!
Mortal Engines
Hugo Weaving has joined Peter Jackson’s Mortal Engines in an undisclosed role. [Variety]
The Escape Plan 3
Even before the release of The Escape Plan 2: Hades, Deadline reports a third film in the “Escape from a high-tech future prison” series has been greenlit, and Sylvester Stallone is ready to return.
Shazam
In an interview promoting Annabelle: Creation, Coming Soon slyly asked director David F. Sandberg about his rumoured attachment to the Shazam movie. Here’s Mr. Sandberg’s even slyer answer:
The thing is, I’ve been super lucky. I’ve only been here two years. “Lights Out” did really well. They’re very excited with how “Annabelle” turned out. There’s a lot of exciting things ahead that I look forward to being able to talk about.
Justice League
Coming Soon has a new poster of the League, united in their ability to stare off-camera at something.
Woman Woman
Here’s a fun little clip of Gal Godot and Chris Pine promoting Wonder Wednesdays. Henceforth, it is decreed that every Wednesday will see new Wonder Woman clips, photos, and materials straight from Warner Bros., so expect to see more from the film pretty soon.

Mission: Impossible 6
A new set video shows Tom Cruise being swung around by a crane in Paris, France.
It’s more impressive at this angle:
Jurassic World 2
B.D. Wong posted some photos of himself taken at Pinewood Studios in London, where the new Jurassic Park is currently filming.
Jessica Jones
The Hashtag Show has purportedly gotten their hands on casting calls for four new series regular roles due to appear in the second season, revealing a few details about each character and a potential name (although it’s likely the names here are not the final names of the characters). The Magicians
Good news! The series has been renewed for a third season at Syfy. [TV Line]
Shadowhunters
And even more good news! The Freeform series has also been renewed for a new season. [Spoiler TV]
Black Lightning & Gifted
Deadline reports both superhero series are likely to be picked up for full seasons, describing Black Lightning as a “hot prospect” for The CW and the X-Men mutant drama Gifted getting a “possible early pickup” from Fox.
Doctor Who
While attending a panel in New York, Peter Capaldi said fans can expect a more alien Doctor this year.
The great thing about playing Doctor Who is you actually have a whole life cycle, y’know? So you can start off quite being born, y’know, in season one and not quite knowing who you are and struggling to find who you are. And then find who you are and you discover, ‘Oh, I’m good with this. This is quite fun. I like this character,’ and then you discover there’s more to Doctor Who than you thought.
The important thing about Doctor Who is there’s always a mystery to him. There’s always a Doctor Who you don’t know because he’s alien, he’s not a human being. So, I think we’re going to see some more of his alienness.
Gotham
The Court of Owls comes home to roost in the synopsis for episode 16 of the season, “The Delicate and Dark Obsessions.”
The Court of Owls devises a new plan regarding the future of Gotham, as Gordon uncovers information about his father and uncle’s past, connecting him back to the organisation. Meanwhile, Bruce wakes up in the temple and learns of the Shaman’s wish for him.
The Last Man On Earth
The Last Man On Earth tackles the existential horror of its premise in the synopsis for the two-part season finale, “When the Going Gets Tough/Nature’s Horchata.”
The long term consequences of surviving an apocalypse start to have a major impact on the group, whose daily life is upended.
The Defenders
Finally, Joe Quesada shared some exciting new artwork for the series — made for the show’s wrap party — on Twitter.
Here’s a quick piece I did (sans logo and text) as a cast and crew gift for the Defenders team. This show is going to blow you away! pic.twitter.com/1Fw9MXTiZf
