You Can Download Night Shift For MacOS For Free Right Now

You no longer have to worry about your laptop’s bright screen disrupting your sleep schedule. Apple just released Night Shift — a feature that reduces blue light from the display in the evening — on the newest version of macOS Sierra (10.12.4). The update has been in testing since January 24, but only developers have been able to download it. Now, the update is available for everyone to use.

You can install the update for free so long as you’re already running macOS Sierra, and you can find it in the Software Update section of the Mac App Store. Once you’ve updated, you can activate Night Shift through the Displays section of System Preferences. The feature can be set to turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise by default — or you can set custom times if you prefer.

This blue-light reducing feature has been around for quite some time on other operating systems and devices. The concept was first popularised by an app called F.lux that was formerly available for iOS before Apple unceremoniously removed it from the App Store. If you prefer the original, F.lux is still available for desktop and it’s also free.
