Ikea Has ‘Smart’ Lighting Now

Moving forward from wireless charging furniture, smart lighting is the next product to be launched in Ikea’s “Home Smart” range.

It has all the usual standard basic features you’d expect from smart lighting – dimming as well as switching between warm and cool lights – and comes in dimmable globes and panels. There’s a separate controller if you don’t want to use the app.

Like the Philips Hue or Belken WiMo systems, there’s no hardwiring needed, and you can have just one smart light or your whole home automated. Unlike the Hue and WiMo, this system is aiming to be super inexpensive, and far simpler to setup. No word on any colour changing or IFTTT integration capabilities, though.

“We know from research that existing smart lighting technology is perceived to be too expensive and difficult to understand, so we have worked to remove those barriers to make smart lighting more accessible,” IKEA Home Furnishing expert Helen Longford said.

The IKEA Smart Lighting collection, which will be available in Australian stores in early 2018 include the “TRÅDFRI” LED bulbs, remote control, gateway kit, motion sensor kit and dimming kits; the “FLOALT” LED light panels, and “SURTE” and “JORMLIEN” LED light doors for “BESTÅ” cabinets and “METOD” kitchen cabinets.

Pricing is to be confirmed.
