It’s almost the weekend! Or, for those of you who pulled a sickie, perhaps it’s been the weekend since 4pm Wednesday. As a nod to Australia Day, we’ve got some true blue Aussie suggestions for this week’s Gizmodo Movie Night, courtesy of Stan and Netflix.
Stan: In the ravaged near future, a savage motorcycle gang rules the road. Terrorising innocent civilians while tearing up the streets, the ruthless gang laughs in the face of a police force bent on stopping them.
Stan: Two teenagers find love and look for a place where they can be together in peace in this Australian drama.
Stan: The true story of Tony Mokbel; how he grew entangled with the country’s most notorious underworld figures, how he built his massive fortune, and how he became a fugitive on a yacht bound for Greece, desperate to escape mounting criminal law battles.
Stan: It’s the film that captivated cinema audiences across the nation and became an instant Aussie classic. Red Dog is the incredible true story of the wandering Kelpie who hitched his way to the mining town of Dampier and into the hearts of its residents
Stan: Miss Fisher sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of late 1920’s Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl handled pistol and her dagger sharp wit.
Stan: HOWZAT is the story of how Kerry Packer caused a cricket war by signing up fifty of the world’s best cricketers and establishing World Series Cricket, a highly-successful group which challenged the Establishment and thrust the game into a new era
Stan: Mick Taylor is an outback force – a loner, a larrikin and an expert hunter. He’s hunted wild boars for a living but now he has switched to a different beast – tourists being his specialty.
Netflix: Sam’s frequent tantrums turn sinister when a creepy children’s book mysteriously appears in his room, and he asks his mother, “Do you want to die?”
Netflix: While Cleaver Greene is a brilliant and driven attorney, he’s also an ex-druggie, a current gambling addict and loathed by many of his colleagues.
Netflix: A teenager finds himself drawn into the clutches of a diabolical criminal family until a good-hearted detective tries to change the boy’s fate.
Netflix: This wild satire follows the misadventures of a group of friends living in an Australian housing project as they attempt scams and dodge the law.
Netflix: A chubby 8-year-old Australian girl, and an obese, adult New Yorker with Asperger’s are a pair of unlikely pen pals in this clay animation feature.
Netflix: Hitler and Emperor Hirohito team up to create a squadron of Nazi Japanese robot super-soldiers, who shoot down the Danger Fighters.
Netflix: In 1972, “Cleo” is bold and naughty, riding the wave of feminism and sexual liberation. Skirts are up, pants are down, and girls can have it all.
Disclosure: Stan is a 50/50 joint venture between Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media. Allure Media, the company which publishes Gizmodo Australia, is also owned by Fairfax.
