Image Cache: If someone told us that these stunning new photos had been taken on Earth, we wouldn’t have blinked an eye. But they weren’t. Instead, every one of these photographs comes from a planet millions of kilometres away from us.

The new collection of over 1000 photographs, which you can browse in its entirety right here, come from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Some of them are, of course, very otherworldly. But there also several that mimic satellite photographs we’ve seen of our planet, underlying again just how close Mars and Earth really are to each other.
We’ve highlighted some of the most Earth-like images from the new trove right here.
