Video: Let me be perfectly clear; this is an eight-minute behind-the-scenes featurette of the oh-my-god-I-can’t-believe-it’s-finally-happening season five of Samurai Jack. It includes no new footage, very little info and only the briefest glimpses of what may be in store. Here’s why you should watch it anyway.
Because, as these interviews clearly show, this is a labour of love for all involved. I know that sounds trite, but I’ve seen a lot of these types of videos in my day, and interviewed plenty of staff people, and these things are usually about towing a company line, trying to advertise the upcoming product and/or trying to sound excited.
Not here. These guys don’t have anything to tease — or they aren’t allowed to — so all they have left is to talk about their feelings about Samurai Jack, and it’s heartwarming to see how much they all enjoy it. They all seem truly happy to be back, to have a chance to complete the story, from Genndy on down. Their tone is legitimately reverential.
It’s also great to hear how neither the increased freedoms of Adult Swim nor the new technology will be substantially changing Samurai Jack, so while the new season may be darker, it won’t feel (or look) like a grim n’ gritty reboot. It may be a bit grim and gritty, but Samurai Jack has always had a large streak of pathos in it. So regardless of the “Dollar Shave Club” beard Jack now sports, we’ll still know Jack when we finally see him again.
