Bed of the Dead

It wouldn't be the run-up to a new season of Doctor Who without rumours of its main actor departing the show. This time British tabloid The Mirror — responsible for the previous rumours circulating about Capaldi's departure in the wake of Jenna Coleman leaving the show — claims that Peter Capaldi isn't just on his way out, but that he could be replaced by his predecessor, Matt Smith.
The idea of a 'degeneration' is already patently ridiculous, even more so when the information is derived from a hodgepodge of comments outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat has made recently, including in the latest issue of Doctor Who magazine, in which he remarks that Matt Smith has been open about his willingness to return to the show:
[Matt is] quite open about how much he misses it, and how much he wishes he hadn't left.
But not to take it over again — especially unlikely considering that Peter Capaldi has confirmed that the BBC asked him to continue on past Moffat's exit next year. It's best to regard this as extremely speculative, if not complete nonsense, for now.
