This Ingenious Candle Holder Automatically Extinguishes The Candle

This simple cast-iron candle holder possesses an ingenious feature: it extinguishes the candle before the wick has a chance to burn out.

Designed by Lars Beller Fjetland for the Danish brand Hay, the Moment candle stick holds a pendulum with a needle on one end. When you insert a candle, you pierce the wax with the needle. When the candle burns down and the wax at that point melts away, the needle’s support is removed and — slam — the dome falls down with the pendulum to extinguish the flame. Fjetland explains to Dezeen:

“This simple mechanism is powered by the stored momentum of the adjustable weight that rests on the very tip of the moveable arm. It is a relatively fool-proof solution that only relays on gravity to function. Cast iron was the perfect functional, as well as aesthetic, match for this design. The matt and heavy appearance of this peculiar object creates a nice contrast to the brilliance of the slow burning flame.”

The candle holder was launched at the Wrong for Hay collection at this week’s Maison&Objet trade fair in Paris. Pricing and availability are yet to be announced.
