Wikileaks published a collection of secret intelligence reports on France from the National Security Agency today, revealing that the NSA spied on the phones of France’s three most recent presidents and top political players, including current president François Hollande.
The collection, called “Espionnage Élysée”, include documents that reveal sensitive French political maneuvers, and it might make things awkward between Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. One of the NSA memos describes how it eavesdropped on Hollande to find out he was holding a secret meeting with the German opposition party because he didn’t like how Merkel handled the Greek Eurozone crisis.
Then again, maybe Merkel and Hollande can bond over how they have both been directly tapped by the NSA.
