At yesterday’s E3 conference, Sony announced that Yu Suzuki would be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund Shenmue III, one of the most sought after video games in the history of the medium. At the time, we joked that it would probably reach its goal in around five seconds. Well, it turns out we weren’t that far off the mark — in a mere eight hours, the project has rocketed past its target to set a new Kickstarter record. Blimey.
The Shenmue III Kickstarter page is currently sitting on a cool $2,693,982, less than a day after launching. This was despite the site being intermittently knocked offline due to the huge surge in traffic. Those Shenmue fans really want to hand over all their money.
The campaign now has 31 days to rake in extra cash which will go towards assorted stretch goals. By our reckoning, the game should easily surpass $4 million as the hype continues to accumulate.
