Whirlpool's New Dryer Recycles Hot Humid Air So It Doesn't Need a Vent

With a breakthrough that will no doubt be lauded by every apartment dweller who has to trudge to a laundromat to clean their clothes, Whirlpool's new HybridCare Heat Pump dryer is actually able to recycle its own hot exhaust which not only makes it more energy-efficient, it also means it doesn't need to vent all that humid air outside. In other words, you can install it pretty much anywhere.

Using a built-in refrigeration system, the HybridCare Heat Pump dryer regenerates energy as it dries and reuses the moist exhaust that's usually just pumped outside through a series of vents. So it's not limited to being installed in a basement or a special closet with proper ventilation. Whirlpool also boasts the new HybridCare dryer uses a whopping 73 per cent less energy on its Eco Dry setting than a traditional dryer, so it's not only easy to install, it could also save you money in the long run.

Available in early 2015 starting at around $US1800, the HybridCare dryer also boasts intelligent sensors that regulate the temperature inside while your clothes tumble to ensure they're not accidentally nuked, as well as a Speed mode that takes less time to dry your laundry at the cost of being less energy-efficient.     It sounds great, but not only is it horribly expensive, it would probably cost an arm and leg to fix if its outside its warranty period.

    Ten seconds with Google would have told you that these have been around for a while and there are plenty on the market.

    You're shitin me right...my LG TD-C700E dryer has had a heat exchange dehumidifying system for years and it wasn't anything that special. If Whirlpool are touting this as new, it's marketing hype, nothing more.

      There are condensing and heat pump dryers and they've been around for at least a decade.

      A better option might be the microwave dryer.

    Condenser dryers are the NORM in Europe, where humidity ends up as frost inside your home with a (cheaper) vented dryer, (if not vented to the outside through a hole in the wall), which is not desirable. (Europeans, like my wife, think that a dryer blowing out moist air is such a bad idea, but then I think emptying out the condenser chamber is also a bad Idea.)

    The heat pump dryers are the latest "fad" in Drying clothes with a minimum of heat inputs.

    Sure the energy consumption will be lower, but then, I don'tactually have a dryer at all, as I have the option of hanging clothes outside in the sun, or inside in the shed if the weather is bad. SO any dryer would be a backward step as far as energy usage is concerned, but the convenience of dry clothes at any time sure is appealing.

    Check the price difference, ~ $350 for a cheap vented dryer, vs $1800-2200 for a (condensing) heat pump dryer, and everywhere in between to suit your budget.

    I don't think the $1500 price difference is going to be at break-even any time in the useful life of the appliance, especially if you use off-peak time of day metered power.

    How about a vented dryer with a heat exchanger collecting waste exhaust heat, uh oh that would result in rusted dripping exhaust vents. I'm sure there will be a good compromise somewhere, like, dump the drips down a drain.

    nothing new here... good for unventilated rooms.

    Though just FYI, for those greenies, the stupidity is that at least in Aus, you could never recoup the additional cost through savings even after 10 years. I'm sure there is a heck more carbon put into making these and a solar panel would work out a better option.
