Last year when Google bought Bump, an app that lets users transfer data from device to device without help from NFC, its plans for the app weren’t clear. But based on reports from Android Police yesterday, Google’s been working on a service that may integrate some of that functionality.
According to the report, the code-name for the project is Copresence, and it sounds a bit like Google’s own take on AirDrop or Android Beam. It would allow users to transfer files and data across devices no matter the operating system, as Android Police’s Liam Spradlin describes:
To authenticate with one another, the two devices would apparently be able to use location information or Bluetooth, perhaps along with a functionality similar to “whisper,” the ultrasonic authentication method Google has used for the Chromecast to allow devices to connect from different networks. Actual information would be transferred using Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi direct.
The site cites examples such as developer documentation and a patent for the service, as well as images of marketing illustrations that show downright adorable tablets and phones hanging out and sharing data. It sounds as though we might be hearing quite a bit more about Copresence over the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled. [Android Police; The Verge]
