So here’s a cool idea. On the new Cellular iPads, Apple is introducing something called the Apple SIM. Basically, it’s a SIM card that lives in the device as soon as you get it and lets you choose from a variety of different data providers. No contract plans that let you bounce around between data carriers giving true power to the people. It’s a great idea that won’t come to Australia.
Here’s how Apple describes Apple SIM:
“The new Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models. The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.”
Apple has told us this morning that the feature is just for the US and UK markets.
Sad face.
