This Home’s Bedrooms Have Wheels So You Can Roll Them Outside

We’ve seen doors that spin on their hinges and whole facades that rotate towards the sun, but there are mechanically simpler ways to approach transforming architecture. Take this home in Brittany, which features small bedrooms on wheels that can be rolled around (or outside of) the house.

The home was designed by Thomas Durand of the studio Raum, for a client that included a family with small children. And while sleeping under the stars is magical, but keeping a tent in your backyard isn’t practical. Instead, Durand put small box bedrooms on wheels — making it easy to spin them out from the living room onto the patio, thanks to a nicely detailed doorway. He even made sure it’d be easy to run electricity to them by putting sockets on the facade.

Here’s what Durand had to say to Dezeen about the box-rooms:

“The wheeled beds are something we suggested to the clients in order to replace the children’s bedrooms and to give different ways of living in the house,” said Durand. “It also refers to traditional box-beds used at the beginning of the century in Brittany.”

Let’s hope these kids appreciate the lengths to which their parents and their architects went to enable what amounts to the most luxurious backyard camping experience ever. Either way, it’s a lovely piece of design. Check out more on Dezeen.
