Australian Government Staffers Banned From Twitter And Facebook Under New Policy

The age of Governmental snafus on social media look to be over, with a new policy passed around the Coalition stating specifically that Twitter and Facebook commentary is banned.

In a bid to keep Coalition staffers in line, the government has a new policy that these members aren’t able to Tweet or post on Facebook outside of official business.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports on the new code of conduct, which reads:

Other than in the course of their professional duties, [Staffers must] not post personal online commentary or other material or publish books or articles expressing personal views which relate to either their minister’s portfolio area or the general work of the Australian government. The Prime Minister’s chief of staff should be consulted for further guidance.

I imagine “further guidance” usually means: “no, never”. [SMH]
