Disney Confirms That It Will Make Spin Off Star Wars Movies Based On Individual Characters

If you’re not already excited for the next Star Wars Trilogy, get this: Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed the rumours that Disney will be making standalone movies based on individual Star Wars characters in addition to the three sequels already announced. That means you could be getting an origin Yoda movie or Han Solo bounty hunter flick or a R2-D2 and C-3PO buddy cop movie!

It basically means the Star Wars movie universe will start to look a lot like Marvel’s, with each character having its own movie franchise (Iron Man, Thor, etc.) and another movie powerhouse franchise combining all those characters (The Avengers). Before Iger had confirmed the standalone movies, Ain’t It Cool had reported that the first stand alone Star Wars movie would be based on Yoda (the stand alone movies will focus on telling the stories of already established characters):

The first Stand Alone film is going to centre upon YODA. At this stage specifics are sparse, but Kathleen Kennedy is putting together a STAR WARS slate… I’m wildly curious for more details on the YODA film – would this be a young or old YODA tale?

Iger told CNBC that these spin off movies won’t affect the release dates of the upcoming Star Wars Trilogy, as the trilogy (Episode VII, VII and IX) will still be released within a six year period starting in 2015. The stand alone movies (Iger referred to them as a “few other films”) will be released in that period of time as well. More Star Wars for everyone! [CNBC, AICN]
