Today Twitter and Nielsen teamed up for a exclusive multi-year agreement to create something called the “Nielsen Twitter TV Rating”. The specifics are vague, but in short, Nielsen cares about Twitter now, and that’s going to play into their ratings somehow.
The question is: will that make ratings more or less effective? Should programming be a slave to the few thousand people who hook boxes up to their TVs or to people who enjoy snarking about shows they might not even like or watch? Or will it even matter at all?
