Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk created this cabinet to look like an antique sewing box. She really hit the nail on the head here, because it immediately reminded me of the rickety old piece my grandmother had.
But van Eijk’s biggie-sized interpretation holds more than just needles and thread. It’s far bigger, so it’s a little trickier to open it up. It’s supported by springs, so when you pull on one side, the entire piece unfolds like an accordion. Sounds simple, but it took ven Eijk four years to figure it out. The results are so beautiful and fun and don’t come with a grandmother knitting you an embarrassing Christmas sweater.
