Google Warned Samsung Not To Copy Apple

Apple's continued disputes with Samsung reach new levels next week when yet another trial kicks off. But this time, Apple plans to argue its case using a raft of internal Samsung documents that openly admit that the company mimicked the iPhone -- and was even warned off doing so by Google.

The documents, to be used by Apple in court, apparently reveal that Samsung deliberately copied some aspects of the iPhone and iPad. They also go on to explain how, in February 2010, Google told Samsung that the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets were "too similar" to the iPad.

Apparently Google wasn't the only one flagging up a warning. According to All Things D, "famous designers" warned Samsung that the Galaxy S "looked like it copied the iPhone too much" and that "innovation [was] needed" because it "[c]losely resemble[d] the iPhone shape so as to have no distinguishable elements." The designer apparently went on: "[a]ll you have to do is cover up the Samsung logo and it's difficult to find anything different from the iPhone." Oh dear.

It'll be interesting to see what Samsung can pull out of its bag to tempter these excerpts. All Things D suggests that Samsung has some 2006 internal design presentations describing a UI similar to the one that later turned up on the iPhone, and that the company also intends to point out that Apple's designs themselves mimic Sony's. Hold tight, it's gonna get lively. [All Things D]

Its clear that they copied, but the galaxy rang has the best hardware and it the only reason I buy it not the looks. Ill never go back to iPhone .

They all look very similar anyway, I mean how many ways can you make a smart phone look different and still make it functional? It's a flat thing with a glass front. It's like Ford taking all other car companies to court because their cars have 4 wheels too.

Exactly. The same is true with every other commodity item, TVs, fridges, cars, etc - the list is endless. Its just that Apple is still living out Steve Job's arrogance and paranoia. They would do better to put all that time, energy, and money spent on law suits towards providing better quality, better service and better value for their customers.

I invited the wheel I'm going to sue everyone who made something circle . it is a stupid law suit what is sad is that if a judge passes this what is stopping everyone else taking out law suits. EG like the above car company, appliances, bikes and so on.

Sorry mate, didn't get your invite. When's that lawsuit happening? Do you mind if I bring along Mr The Saucer and Ms Coin to the hearings?

Google got it wrong and they are blinded. Samsung did not copy Apple.

Someone is trying to blind us too... with a heap of quote edits, [seem]s a little [bit] dodg[y]

They all need to realise that if they got their shit sorted, stopped arguing in court and got on with making brilliant devices, then they'd all be making more money!

When I first saw the galaxy s I could see vague resemblance but it was different. Many products looks the same. You are right. This is just Apple protecting its bottom line and hurting Samsung's. Corporate history proves this. History repeats over and over again and we are arrogant not see it.

      Well said

Looks like apple is pulling an accusation out of their bullshit hat.

All you have to do is cover up the thing that says 'hey, this isn't an iPhone!' .. and it looks like an iPhone.

..what? If you put an iPhone and a feature phone behind a wall, you can't tell them apart either.

Smoking Gun. If Google believed it was a rip off of the iPad, that speaks volumes. They still deny the touch UI wasn't lifted from iOS when it clearly was. Samsung=sitting duck. KAAABLEWWYYY!!

If I was a phone manufacturer (e.g Samsung) I would want to make my phone look far different from the iPhone so that people can distinguish my brand over any another. Why would you want to look like the iPhone. There are so many unique shapes and designs to explore.

I agree, look at HTC, Sony & RIM. They all try to create their own 'look'. Remember Samsung copied Apple in lots of areas, not just the phone itself. Look at the packaging, the power bricks, posters etc.

Samsung should proud of who they are and come ideas that set them apart from Apple. You don't want people to think your products are made by someone else.

The fact that you have to say "It's not an iPhone" is points how close they are. Has anyone ever mistaken a Blackberry for an iPhone?

"The designer apparently went on: “[a]ll you have to do is cover up the Samsung logo and it’s difficult to find anything different from the iPhone.” Oh dear."

Does anyone think that the Galaxy SIII looks like an iPhone? Or performs like one? No, of course not. It has a very different shape, its much bigger, it has rounded edges and corners, it runs Android. Apple does not have a monopoly [or patent] on square or rectangular devices that makes phone calls and run apps, as much as their late co-founder would have liked.

The iPhone, and the iPad are commodity items, performing functions that other devices did before they were brought to market. I had a smartphone, the O2 XDA [made by HTC] well before the iPhone, and Microsoft, amongst others, produced a tablet computer well before the iPad. Apple didn't get there first, on any of its devices, contrary to what it would have you believe.

I wouldn't say Samsung copied Apple at all! I mean the Galaxy doesn't suck wang like the iphone does.

What about the story of Apple coping Sony. I wonder if Sony will put its two cents in? It could end up like the GM versus Toyota on the Hummer grill to the Mega Crusier Grill. Then came Lambo with the original grill design and the whole court case shutdown and Lambo threatened GM over the use of the grill!

So if samsuck are "claiming" Apple copied Sony, where is the Sony phone? And if Apple copied Sony, who did samsuck copy? Honestly, if they were trying to design a phone that DIDN"T look like an iPhone, they failed, or succeed, depending on your view point. Samsuck knew what they were doing. They copied everything, including the packaging and the commercials. PA-THET-IC.

Somebody needs to get spanked lol
