Oakley Is Making Its Own Google Glasses

As dorky as you'll look wearing Google Glasses, the idea of augmented reality specs is dripping with potential awesomeness (and guaranteed hilarity). So it's not a surprise that sunglasses king Oakley is working on its own Google Glasses competitor. Maybe they won't be as ugly as Google's?

I know, I know, we're talking about Oakley. Bike cop-outfitting, aftershave-smelling Oakley. But aside from momentary lapses of taste, Oakley can still pump out a good pair of glasses (the Frogskins are great and its glasses for athletes are forever popular). And if there is one thing Oakley knows, its optics. If you're wearing glasses, it's a good idea to get the lenses right, right? This could work! Oakley told Bloomberg:

As an organisation, we've been chasing this beast since 1997. Ultimately, everything happens through your eyes, and the closer we can bring it to your eyes, the quicker the consumer is going to adopt the platform.

According to Bloomberg, the glasses will function on its own while also working with a smartphone. The whole system might be controlled with Siri-like voice commands and is currently targeted to launch for athletes first. Oakley CEO Colin Baden said "that's the halo point of where we would begin" and then branch out to other fields (military? normal life?) with a huge emphasis on style because, "people get very particular when they put stuff on their face". Here's to hoping Oakley can make something worth wearing. [Bloomberg]

Casey, how can you call the google glasses ugly? The design is incredible!

The desgin IS incredible, it's also ugly... like pig spewtom mixed with the brown stuff that comes out the back end of a dog ugly.

Oakley glasses just look like servo sunnies anyway, I really don't get the appeal. It's not like they're Ray Ban or similar.

In my opinion those hip Ray Bans that don't properly cover your peripheral vision look like shit. I don't know why they're so popular, except perhaps via celebrity endorsement? I dunno...

Their plastic framed lineup look massively shit, like the ones in the picture above.

If you think the google glass is ugly, I can't wait to hear your opinion on the Oakley ones. Not to throw gasoline on the fire, but they aren't exactly known for subtle designs. I expect about 10 points of plastic and some american flag icons. Some people over at http://www.oakleyforum.com think that if they dive into the world of interactive glasses, they will create a more subtle design to appeal to the masses, but lets face it, this is oakley. Only time will tell, I'm sure Oakley is waiting to see the publics reaction to Google's Glass.

Wow the Oakley concept pic up there looks far far worse than the Google version. The Google ones actually look alright while the Oakley ones look like someone glued a bluetooth headset onto some sunnies.

Also, buying tech from Oakley? :/
I suppose they might be alright linked into a smartphone.

Brfore you go assuming about Oakley and tech......isn't the owner of Oakley the same person behind Red?

That oakley 'concept pic' isn't a concept, it was for mp3-playing bluetooth-connected glasses a few years ago.
