Many of the internet’s big players, like Facebook, Google and Twitter, actively oppose SOPA. Now you can add Microsoft to that list. Well, kind of.
Micrsoft has been reluctant to voice its opinions on the bill until now. But yesterday a Microsoft spokesperson told GeekWire:
“We oppose the passage of the SOPA bill as currently drafted. We think the White House statement points in a constructive way to problems with the current legislation, the need to fix them, and the opportunity for people on all sides to talk together about a better path forward.”
The statement to which that refers was about Domain Name System blocking — and has been seen as a softening, not a victory.
I guess Microsoft is conflicted over SOPA. It runs major online sites and services — MSN, Skype — but it’s also suffered immensely with piracy in the past. This is, at least, a step in the right direction. [GeekWire]
