Man Grows New Fingertip On His Stomach (Warning: Gross)

When you lose the tip of your finger in an accident, you figure you’ll go through the rest of your life being called Stumpy. Warning: graphic image.

But if you’ve got a stomach (and I think most of us do) and an enterprising doctor, you can grow that tip right back on your midsection. Which is brilliant and, as you’ll see below, also totally disgusting.

Orange News reports that after sawing off the tip of his finger, 20-year-old furniture worker Wang Yongjun was rushed to a hospital in the Liaong province of China. There, doctors discovered that the muscle and tissue had been sheared away from his digit and only bone was left. Dr Huang Xuesong explains what happened next:

“We had to make a quick decision or he could have lost his finger. We decided to cultivate a new fingertip on his stomach.”

By attaching Wang’s finger to his stomach, the doctors hoped that new skin and muscle would grow around it. The procedure is also a way to restore blood circulation to the injured area, since blood flow is crucial to the body repairing itself.

The operation was a success, according to Dr Xuesong, and Wang should have a brand new fingertip within a month (as long as he doesn’t jerk his arm suddenly?). Oh, and his hand won’t be attached to his stomach anymore, which is good because it kinda looks like a tiny stomach penis. There, I said it. [Orange News via Nothing To Do With Arbroath]
