The SUNY Downstate Medical Center has again been caught executing irresponsible X-ray scans of premature babies, who are extremely vulnerable to the radiation’s dangerous effects. State inspectors say the scans were conducted without proper shielding, the second rash since 2007.
The NYT reports 27 excessive scans were found in the hospital records, including X-rays that had exposed babies’ “neck, chest, abdomen, the upper arms and a small section of the right thigh”, as well as “the entire head, left arm, right arm, chest and abdomen”. A chest X-ray is supposed to be a chest X-ray – nothing more. [NYT]
