Workers Evacuated As Smoke Rises In Fukushima Reactors

A column of white smoke has been detected rising from the reactor 2 building at Fukushima Daiichi a few minutes after 6pm JST. Another column of smoke is also rising from reactor 3. As a result, workers have been evacuated temporarily.

Emergency work by the Tokyo Fire Department has been halted until there’s an assessment of the new situation. The Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says that they don’t know yet if work will resume on Tuesday.

The move follows another temporary evacuation today at 3.55pm, after another column of smoke was detected southeast of reactor 3. [Kyodo]
