Windows 7 RC1 Isn't Quite As Free As You'd Hope

If you were hoping to bludge off the free Windows 7 RC1 download until next June before deciding whether or not to upgrade, you're probably going to reconsider that decision come next March, when the OS starts shutting down your PC every two hours.Reader Matt tipped us off to this nugget in the RC1 download site:

"Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use."

So sure, it will work up until June 1 2010, but it won't be usable past the first of March. That's still plenty of time to test out the software, but it's going to get mighty annoying mighty quickly when it starts shutting down your PC every couple of hours.
