J.J. Abrams And Daisy Ridley Will Reunite For A Very Non-Star Wars-y Film

Director J.J. Abrams and actress Daisy Ridley will forever be linked. Not just because of their work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but because Abrams gave Ridley her big break. Now, the pair are continuing their good fortune with a new movie that feels as far away from Star Wars as that galaxy far, far away.

The Wrap reports Ridley will star in Kolma, based on a 2003 Israel movie of the week called All I’ve Got. Abrams will produce, with Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) in talks to direct.

Kolma is about an elderly woman who passes away and, on her way to the afterlife, is posed with a choice. She can go back to being 22, the age that she lost her husband in a tragic accident, or she can move onto the afterlife reunited with the man she lost 50 years earlier. The Wrap describes it as a mix of The Notebook and Defending Your Life.

Whenever this film happens, it’s nice to see Abrams spreading his wings out of the franchise/genre world. Recently, even when he produces, the movies are big budget blockbusters or heavy on the sci-fi. Kolma certainly has a bit of that — but it also feels a bit more like a throwback to the Regarding Henry/Felicity J.J., who wore his heart on his sleeve.
