On Sunday night, a gunman killed more than 50 people at a country music festival outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. On Monday morning, authorities identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock. But in an episode that has become sadly familiar in the immediate aftermath of such tragedies, amateur sleuths on 4chan incorrectly identified the shooter as another man -- and this time Google helped signal boost their misinformation.

Details are still emerging about an attack carried out near the UK's Houses of Parliament on Wednesday. As officials try to determine the identity of a suspect who was shot by police, a 4chan thread from less than 24 hours earlier appears to announce the location of the attack that has claimed four lives so far.

Yesterday Buzzfeed published an incendiary document alluded to in an earlier CNN scoop. The 35-page report, supposedly written by an ex-intelligence agent, alleged among other things, that US President-elect Trump had hired "a number of prostitutes to perform a 'golden showers' (urination) show in front of him" and that Trump had engaged in "sex parties" in Russia. The fallout of this publication is now being referred to as pissgate, and of course, Trump's ardent imageboard supporters are spinning elaborate yarns about its origin.
