If nothing else, 2017 has been a truly great year for science fiction and fantasy films. While many have been major motion pictures that no one could have avoided hearing about, there were also several standout movies that may have fallen through the cracks. We're here to fix that. Here are the fantastic films you may have missed this year, most of which are now currently streaming or available on Blu-ray.

Predicting the future is near impossible -- but that doesn‘t stop us all from having a red hot go. Human beings have been predicting the future since the beginning of history and the results range from the hilarious to the downright uncanny.

One thing all future predictions have in common: they‘re rooted in our current understanding of how the world works. It‘s difficult to escape that mindset. We have no idea how technology will evolve, so our ideas are connected to the technology of today.

Video: To make the bond between Mija (An Seo Hyun) and the giant super pig she befriends in the forest as believable as possible, the VFX team behind Netflix's Okja came up with several different ways for the young actress to interact with a physical representation of the CG beast on set, including this hilariously bad foam-wrapped costume they affectionately called the stuffie.

Bong Joon Ho's Okja is named for the magical superpig that everyone desires in some way: The Mirando Corporation wants sell her as its new meat product. The Animal Liberation Front wants to use her to expose Mirando. And Mija (An Seo Hyun) just wants the companion she raised for 10 years back again. So if the completely CG creature didn't work on-screen, the movie would have fallen apart.

If you've seen one of Bong Joon Ho's movies before -- The Host or Snowpiercer, for example -- then it shouldn't be surprising at all to you that Okja is a mix of dead seriousness and bursts of farcical humour. It's also a movie with a very complicated message, anchored by a tale about a beautiful girl and her monster. And once you see it, you won't be able to forget it.
