If nothing else, 2017 has been a truly great year for science fiction and fantasy films. While many have been major motion pictures that no one could have avoided hearing about, there were also several standout movies that may have fallen through the cracks. We're here to fix that. At the end of May, I got on a school bus just as the sun was setting and was driven into the woods 20 minutes south of one of Austin's Alamo Drafthouse theatres. At a campsite tucked away off a walking trail, I saw one of the year's most disturbing films projected onto an outdoor movie screen. The next day, I asked director Trey Shults where he found the inspiration for the harrowing It Comes at Night, which hits cinemas today.

Trey Edward Shults' directorial debut, Krisha, was one of the most traumatising films of 2016. Though it wasn't technically a horror movie, its Thanksgiving-from-hell tale is still giving us nightmares. His next film, It Comes At Night, is more overtly situated in the horror genre, and its first teaser is as enigmatic as it is unsettling.
