It doesn't matter if a movie's good, bad, or just mediocre - any film can have a moment that makes your jaw drop in awe or tears come to your eyes, or makes you shudder in irritation and disgust. Here are all the greatest and worst individual moments from the cinematic releases of 2017.

Holy crap was there a lot of television this year. While we've already covered our best and worst shows of the year, there were many specific moments in these series, as well as memorable highlights from shows that didn't make it into our Top 10 list, that we'd be remiss to not highlight - or remind you of how awful they were. Steel yourselves, here comes our best and worst TV moments of 2017.

Though we'll miss the many actors, authors, and artists - as well as the favourite TV shows, comics, and characters - who left us this year, at least we'll always have the joy, thrills, stinging one-liners, breathtaking action scenes, and iconic moments they left behind.

This year's genre fiction can be defined by many things, but weirdly enough, 2017 has been very big for Captains. Not majors, nor generals, not even sergeants or admirals or petty officers, or any other rank you can think of - just Captains, and here are how they all ranked this year.

Mercifully, 2017 has begun fading in the distance. It can be easy to look back at the last 355 days or so and see only the bad stuff - super easy, actually - but 2017 wasn't without its good days, too. We have huddled together to assemble lists of the past year's happy surprises and disappointments, so pull up a seat and get a big helping of what went down over the last 12 months.

It's been a wild year for comics - full of swirling, grand relaunches and controversial events, but more importantly, some damn good books. As ever, it's tough to whittle down the multitude of stories and characters we've read about this year into a list of the best, but here are 15 of our absolute favourite comics of this year.

This year, we were glued to our TVs and/or whatever device was streaming our scifi and fantasy favourites. It was tough narrowing down a top 10 - and you may be surprised by what's missing. The bottom five took a little less time to assemble, but still, this wasn't easy either. Here are the shows we loved and loathed most this year

As 2017 comes to an end, we start to look back at the year that was. In film, at least, the year was excellent. So excellent, in fact, that figuring out the top 10 scifi, superhero, and fantasy films was incredibly difficult. However, while there are at least 25-30 movies from 2017 deserve at least some recognition, ultimately, the cream rises to the top.

To paraphrase Charles Dickens, 2016 was the worst of times, and the pretty good of times. It was a year of wonder (Game of Thrones) and disappointment (Walking Dead), amusement (Deadpool) and aggravation (Suicide Squad), delight (a few things) and loss (too many to count). Relive the year that was in entertainment with our most-read posts of the year, and then let us never speak of 2016 again.

The films the io9 team has picked as the best science fiction and genre films of 2016 are a very motley crew. This year we loved superheroes, animation, farting corpses, live action, talking animals, and more. These are films spanning different genres, disciplines, and themes, which experienced varied levels of success. Each is worthy of acknowledgment, though, so check out what we crowned the best of the best, and worst of the worst.

Unlike pretty much everything else, science fiction and fantasy had a great 2016. There were so many great shows that we had a lot of contenders for our best list, and only a few for our worst, so we ended up with twice as many TV series to acclaim as disparage. After a fair amount of debate, here's the best of the best and worst of the meh.

It has been a frankly amazing year for comics -- filled with big events, controversial moments, and an incredible variety of comics, with diversity in genre, characters, and stories giving us shelf upon shelf of amazing books to dig into week after week. It was hard to narrow them down to 20, but without further ado, here are our absolute favourite comics from this year.

Ranking movies or TV shows is easy compared to more traditional art. There are a finite amount of scifi TV shows and movies you can watch, but pop culture art is damn near infinite. Every sliver of the internet is chock-full of it, not to mention the professional galleries, poster companies, on and on.

It's been a pretty great year for movies, TV shows, and especially comics -- but just about the worst for everything else. Political nightmares, celebrity deaths, more political nightmares... the list of horrors go on, which had the odd effect of making the year's on-screen disasters look almost... comforting by comparison. Here are some of the nightmare scenarios we'd have rather dealt with than 2016 itself.

The year 2016 has been exceptionally cruel, particularly in the realms of celebrity deaths and politics. As we gather supplies for the apocalypse bunkers we began constructing on November 9, let's take a moment to look back at the people and things we're really, truly going to miss from this past year.

In movies, there's usually a moment where everything clicks. Where the image, emotion and sound meet in perfect harmony and no matter what happens before or after, you realise you are in love with this moment. The cinema of 2016 had plenty of these moments, and we picked our 16 favourites.

Thanks to the wonder that is the internet, every truth comes with two lies. There were a ton of rumours that circulated this year about our favourite movies, shows and comic book franchises. Of course, a ton of them turned out to be total garbage -- and sometimes, that was a real disappointment. Here are some of the year's biggest rumours we desperately wanted to come true.
