To paraphrase Charles Dickens, 2016 was the worst of times, and the pretty good of times. It was a year of wonder (Game of Thrones) and disappointment (Walking Dead), amusement (Deadpool) and aggravation (Suicide Squad), delight (a few things) and loss (too many to count). Relive the year that was in entertainment with our most-read posts of the year, and then let us never speak of 2016 again.

The films the io9 team has picked as the best science fiction and genre films of 2016 are a very motley crew. This year we loved superheroes, animation, farting corpses, live action, talking animals, and more. These are films spanning different genres, disciplines, and themes, which experienced varied levels of success. Each is worthy of acknowledgment, though, so check out what we crowned the best of the best, and worst of the worst.

Predicting the future is near impossible -- but that doesn‘t stop us all from having a red hot go. Human beings have been predicting the future since the beginning of history and the results range from the hilarious to the downright uncanny.

One thing all future predictions have in common: they‘re rooted in our current understanding of how the world works. It‘s difficult to escape that mindset. We have no idea how technology will evolve, so our ideas are connected to the technology of today.

Unlike pretty much everything else, science fiction and fantasy had a great 2016. There were so many great shows that we had a lot of contenders for our best list, and only a few for our worst, so we ended up with twice as many TV series to acclaim as disparage. After a fair amount of debate, here's the best of the best and worst of the meh.

Looking back over the year, it's easy to remember all the horrible, terrible, shitty things that happened. It may seem like nothing good happened in 2016, but that's not quite true. We've compiled lists of both the good and the bad things that warmed our nerdy hearts this year... or that made us want to set everything on fire and watch the world burn.

Ranking movies or TV shows is easy compared to more traditional art. There are a finite amount of scifi TV shows and movies you can watch, but pop culture art is damn near infinite. Every sliver of the internet is chock-full of it, not to mention the professional galleries, poster companies, on and on.

Virtual reality finally arrived. Self-driving cars started wandering streets and past red lights. SpaceX aborted a rocket launch four times within a week. Samsung started strong with the Galaxy S7 and finished with the Note7 nuking itself into orbit while you slept.

We had new graphics cards, and most of them were pretty damn good. Consoles broke the mould by releasing new hardware mid-cycle and becoming more like PCs than ever before. And, unsurprisingly, we found out once again that Einstein really knew his shit.

It's been a big year for tech. Let's break down this year's biggest moments.

In movies, there's usually a moment where everything clicks. Where the image, emotion and sound meet in perfect harmony and no matter what happens before or after, you realise you are in love with this moment. The cinema of 2016 had plenty of these moments, and we picked our 16 favourites.

Thanks to the wonder that is the internet, every truth comes with two lies. There were a ton of rumours that circulated this year about our favourite movies, shows and comic book franchises. Of course, a ton of them turned out to be total garbage -- and sometimes, that was a real disappointment. Here are some of the year's biggest rumours we desperately wanted to come true.
