The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are here.

After months of speculation, Apple has finally put a tonne of rumours to bed, releasing the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Noticeably, there’s no more iPhone Mini (RIP), but the Plus has been introduced to fill the gap.

Apple’s iPhone 14 range

Although part of the same range, each of the four phones are different, tailored to cover anyone’s needs (in true Apple form). When it comes to similarities, they all retain the same ‘Apple’ feel. But the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have swapped the ‘notch’ for a ‘Dynamic Island’. It’s a pill-like space for Face ID that expands when you, for example, receive a call or notification.

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are also the same size as their Pro and Pro Max friends, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays. The camera system across the range has been upgraded, but the 14 and 14 Plus will miss out on the 48MP camera the Pro pair have. They also don’t get the latest in Apple Silicon, with the A16 bionic chip reserved only for those opting for the Pro.

iPhone 14

The new phones boast powerful new cameras, a photonic engine, Action Mode, Apple’s A15 bionic chip, Emergency SOS via Satellite, Crash Detection, the best battery life in an iPhone and the other standard Apple stuff.

A15 Bionic

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus boast Apple’s A15 Bionic – the 5-core GPU enables smoother graphics for video apps and gaming, allowing the camera system to do its thing, too. The 6-core CPU, meanwhile, handles demanding tasks and the 16-core Neural Engine is capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second (think super fast machine learning computations for iOS 16 features – more on the software in a sec).

iPhone 14 and 14 Plus camera system

The 14 and 14 Plus both have new Main and front TrueDepth cameras. The main camera is 12MP that features a larger sensor and larger pixels, a new front TrueDepth camera, the Ultra-Wide camera (think a larger scene capture) and Photonic Engine (a boost to low-light performance).

“Photonic Engine enables this dramatic increase in quality by applying the computational benefits of Deep Fusion earlier in the imaging process to deliver extraordinary detail, and preserve subtle textures, provide better colour and maintain more information in a photo,” Apple said.

Main camera: 12MP ƒ/1.5 aperture and 1.9 µm pixels (photo and video improvements in all light, better detail, motion freezing, faster exposure times and optical image stabilisation). TrueDepth camera:  ƒ/1.9 aperture for better low-light performance. It also now uses autofocus. Cinematic mode is now available in 4K at 30 fps and 4K at 24 fps. We’ve also got Dolby Vision HDR.

iOS 16, Apple’s phone software

Apple first announced iOS 16 back in June at its annual WWDC developer conference. Some features of the new software shipping with the iPhone 14 range include the ability to unsend or edit texts sent via iMessage, (almost) complete Lock Screen customisation, Family sharing (think parental controls), the ability to share photo galleries with family and friends and makeovers to a few existing apps/features/settings.

We’ve had the iOS 16 Beta running on our phones for a while, and aside from the expected bugs that have been quickly fixed by updates, the new software is great (once you get used to it).

But wait, there’s more

A handful of additional features include Emergency SOS via Satellite – antennas will connect to a satellite to let someone know you’re in trouble. Once connected, you can then send messages for help via Apple’s proprietary algorithm to send a message in 15 seconds (if you have a clear view of the sky). You can use Find My to share your location via satellite. It starts with the U.S. and Canada, no word on Australia just yet.

Like the new Apple Watch Series 8, the iPhone 14 range will also ship with ‘crash detection’ – a feature like ‘fall detection’, but instead of say falling off your bike, crash detection will know when you’ve been in a severe car crash.

Additionally, our friends in the U.S. won’t have a physical SIM tray anymore, with eSIM the standard. This won’t happen yet for Australia, however.

Lastly, later this year, Apple Fitness+ will be available for all iPhone users, even those without an Apple Watch.
