Gadgettes: We Have a Problem With Plugging Into The Metaverse (It’s Facebook)

Gizmodo’s consumer tech team has a podcast, Gadgettes, and our second episode just dropped on your preferred podcast platform! Each week, your hosts, Gizmodo reporter Florence Ion and senior editor Caitlin McGarry, womansplain the gadgets we’re testing and reviewing as well as interview our fellow Gizmodo reporters about the week’s biggest tech news.

This week, it’s all about the metaverse. Facebook — or, sorry, Meta — is trying to usher in the next era of computing, and we have some questions. Will Mark Zuckerberg’s big company name change convince people to step inside his virtual world?

Gizmodo reporter Shoshana Wodinsky also joins us to talk about the Facebook Papers and why the Meta name change may possibly be related to the leaked docs. Shosh explains what we’ve learned about Facebook’s algorithms and what you can do if you’re deeply embedded in Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp (because quitting isn’t so easy for everyone).

But it’s not all serious. We’ll take a moment to fangirl about the Peloton bike, while acknowledging it is indeed a cult, and also chat about the new Peloton Tread and what the company can do to restore its image after its disastrous handling of the Tread+ recall.

We created this podcast because tech coverage has historically been homogenous and targeted toward a specific audience, particularly in podcasting. Enthusiasm for technology and gadgets is no longer an exclusive club. We want to invite everyone to join us, so if you’re looking for a fresh perspective on tech, we hope you’ll feel welcome to tune in. And while we’ll nerd out on specs sometimes, we’ll do our best to keep the pod accessible to all.

You can listen and subscribe to Gadgettes in the embedded player above, or try us at Apple Podcasts, Pocketcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, or plain RSS.

Thanks for tuning in, and if you have questions or comments, we’d love to hear from you: gadgettes@gizmodo.com
