Beloved voice actor Phil LaMarr picked up hosting duties at last night’s virtual Eisner Awards at San Diego Comic-Con 2021. Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru were big winners thanks to their DC Comics work on Superman Smashes the Klan. Stan Sakai also won a couple Eisners for Usagi Yojimbo. Shall we forge ahead and learn the rest?
After last year’s controversial voting process, all seemed to go smoothly this time around for the 33rd year of the awards. Though Comic-Con International’s administrator of the awards, Jackie Estrada, did mention all of the judges were located in Southern California this year for convenience (usually judges would do their work over a three-day weekend in San Diego itself). In addition to the comic awards, there were also two special awards given out: The Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award went to Mike and Christine Mignola and the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award went to Laughing Ogre in Columbus, Ohio, owned by Chris Lloyd.
