One thing the CW’s Arrowverse will always be able to lord over Marvel’s cinematic universe is the fact that it’s been featuring a number of different queer characters for years at this point, whereas Marvel Studios is only just now getting around to bothering to let audiences have a little queer representation, as a treat.
Black Lightning isn’t the first of the Arrowverse shows to put a queer superhero right in the middle of all the action and drama, but in this week’s episode, the series took a brief pause from the ongoing war plaguing Freeland in order to focus on love.
Because “The Book of War: Chapter Two: Freedom Ain’t Free” is the penultimate episode of Black Lightning‘s third season it’s both dense with plot and predominantly focused on establishing just how dangerous a threat the villain Gravedigger (guest star Wayne Brady) is.
%20has%20made%20it%20clear%20that%20if%20they%E2%80%99re%20unable%20to%20stop%20him,%20the%20government%20won%E2%80%99t%20hesitate%20to%20simply%20drop%20a%20bomb%20on%20the%20city%20rather%20than%20run%20the%20risk%20of%20villain%20living.%20</p>%0A<p>Everyone%20knows%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20more%20than%20possible%20they%20could%20very%20well%20end%20up%20dying%20within%20a%20matter%20of%20hours%20depending%20on%20how%20things%20turn%20out,%20and%20so,%20in%20an%20attempt%20to%20relish%20the%20time%20they%20still%20have%20together,%20Anissa%20and%20Grace%20Choi%20gather%20their%20friends%20and%20family%20to%20share%20a%20meal%20together%20and%20to%20make%20an%20announcement.</p>%0A<p>Grace%20and%20Anissa%20not%20only%20want%20to%20get%20married,%20the%20pair%20<em>insist</em>%20on%20wedding%20immediately,%20and%20when%20their%20friends%20and%20family%20show%20up%20for%20dinner,%20they%E2%80%99re%20shocked%20to%20realise%20they%E2%80%99ve%20walked%20into%20an%20impromptu%20ceremony.%20With%20Gambi%20willing%20to%20officiate,%20there%E2%80%99s%20no%20reason%20Anissa%20and%20Grace%20<em>can%E2%80%99t</em>%20get%20hitched%20right%20then%20and%20there,%20and%20while%20Lynn%20and%20Jefferson%20are%20initially%20alarmed%20at%20their%20daughter%E2%80%99s%20sudden%20decision%20to%20marry%20someone%20she%20kinda%20sorta%20only%20barely%20knows,%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20take%20much%20to%20convince%20them%20to%20get%20on%20board.</p>%0A%5Bimage%20url='https://gizmodo.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/04/eapxrlcl3h64uebcwvxt.png'%20size='xlarge'%20licence='Image:%20The%20CW'%20caption='Grace%20and%20Anissa%20announcing%20their%20nuptials.%20(Image:%20The%20CW)'%20align='centre'%20clear='true'%20%5D%0A<p>A%20gay%20couple%20deciding%20to%20get%20married%20because%20they%E2%80%99re%20not%20sure%20whether%20or%20not%20they%E2%80%99re%20going%20to%20survive%20the%20week%20isn%E2%80%99t%20exactly%20revolutionary%20or%20the%20most%20significant%20kind%20of%20queer%20representation%20one%20might%20pay%20much%20attention%20to.%20But%20at%20the%20same%20time,%20it%E2%80%99s%20kind%20of%20wild%20that%20a%20network%20TV%20show%20about%20a%20family%20of%20superheroes%20made%20a%20point%20of%20highlighting%20a%20queer,%20interracial%20couple%20(in%20which%20neither%20person%20is%20white)%20in%20the%20midst%20of%20a%20plotline%20about%20saving%20a%20city%20from%20destruction.</p>%0A<p>Of%20course,%20this%20could%20all%20be%20pretense%20for%20something%20tragic%20in%20<em>Black%20Lightning</em>%E2%80%98s%20season%20finale,%20because%20the%20show%E2%80%99s%20been%20building%20towards%20a%20conflict%20that%20could%20very%20well%20lead%20to%20a%20character%20dying%20in%20battle.%20But%20hopefully,%20what%20Grace%20and%20Anissa%20have%20built%20together%20won%E2%80%99t%20be%20for%20naught,%20and%20<em>Black%20Lightning</em>%20plans%20to%20use%20this%20new%20facet%20of%20their%20relationship%20to%20explore%20what%20married%20life%20is%20like%20for%20a%20pair%20of%20superheroes%20who%20save%20the%20world%20together.</p>%0A){kind=link}
