Overnight Oppo announced its new Reno phone range over two split events in China and Switzerland.
The reason for the dual-unveiling was because the latter was used to announce the Reno 5G, which was demonstrated on Swisscom’s 5G network.
But while that’s cool and all, I can’t stop staring intensly at the skewed pop-up camera ‘wedge’.

Oppo first introduced the pop-up concept to its phones with the Find X in 2018. It would slide up from the device in a straight, horizontal fashion.
But the Reno has tweaked its offering with an angled pop-up display that is messing with my head. I don’t know if I love or hate it. Possibly both?
My lizard brain aside, there a two non-5G versions of the Reno; a standard and a 10x zoom.
The flagship 10x comes with a 6.6-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. And thanks to the potentially cursed pop-up camera, it is also rocking a 93.1 per cent screen-to-body ratio.
The triple-camera setup includes a 48MP main camera, 8MP super wide 120 degree camera and a 13MP periscopic zoom camera.
The combined focal length of the lenses is 16mm – 160mm which equates to 10x hybrid zoom.
The 10x edition will record video at 4K 60fps and includes hybrid stabilisation, 3D audio capture and audio zoom.
And then there’s the selfie cam, which is where the pop-up wedge comes in. It comes in at 16MP and has a soft flash light.
Oppo has stated that the motor should last over five years, based on a hundred times per day use case.
Under the hood there is a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB storage and a 4,065mAh battery with Super VOOC 3.0 fast charging.
With the 10x hybrid zoom inclusion, it sure seems like Oppo is cutting Huawei’s grass here. After all, this announcement has been dropped mere days before the P30 Pro launches.
The standard edition has similar specs, but with a downgraded Snapdragon 710 processor, smaller 3,765mAh battery and a 6.4-inch display.
It also doesn’t have the wide or periscoptic cameras – they are replaced with a 5MP depth camera.
It will record video at 4K 30fps with electronic stabilisation and won’t have the 3D audio capture or zoom.
While there will be no Face ID style unlocking option, the entire range will have in-display fingerprint ID.
We’re expecting the 5G version to have the same specs as the 10x, but with the inclusion of Qualcomm’s X55 modem.
There’s been no word on whether we’ll see the Reno range hit Australia, but the standard and 10x versions will be available in China from April 14. The 5G Reno will be out later in the year.
The pricing will start at 2,999 yuan (around $625) for the standard and 3,999 yuan (around $830) for the 10x Zoom edition.
In the meantime, I’ll still be thinking about that pop-up wedge…
