Huawei’s Patented a Phone with a Square Screen on the Back

Phones are officially getting weird again, and Huawei is right up there in the vanguard.

The Chinese mega-manufacturer has patented a new design for a phone that includes a horizontal treble camera array and a square screen on the back panel.

As with other recent leaks, the patent was discovered by LetsGoDigital and turned into 3D renders that give us a better idea of what to expect if the phone comes to market:

Interestingly, the main screen of the phone still has a tiny notch – possibly a time-of-flight camera for 3D functionality like face recognition. There’s no sign of a fingerprint sensor, so we can assume it’s either built into the screen or the power button.

There’s also an interesting tidbit in the patent drawings – the third camera lens is square. As Slashgear notes, that suggests a periscope zoom like we’re expecting on the Huawei P30 when it launches in Paris later this month.

The big question, though, is what is that second screen all about? Is it for Instagram? Selfies? Watching TV on a square screen like we did in the 90s? Guesses in the comments please.
