If you’ve been having issues with Gmail or Google Drive this afternoon, you’re not alone.
It looks like these services are down for some users globally.
It looks like services should be working as normal again. Google has released a statement saying that the issues have been fixed, though it is yet to reveal the cause.
“The problem with Gmail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”
Fault reports on Down Detector have also reduced significantly over the past few hours.

Widespread reports of issues began just before 2PM AEDT, with users taking to social media to complain.

Down Detector’s live outage map is showing that some of the worst hit countries at the present time include Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and the United States.
Not all Gmail and Google Drive users are experiencing the outage, however. We can confirm that at the time of writing the Gizmodo inbox was working just fine.
Google has issued a statement at 1:53pm saying, “We’re investigating reports of an issue with Gmail. We will provide more information shortly. The affected users are able to access Gmail, but are seeing error messages, high latency, and/or other unexpected behaviour.”
Google has also confirmed similar issues with Google Drive, including “error messages, high latency and/or other unexpected behaviour.”
Google is yet to divulge the reason for the outages or when they are likely to be resolved.
A similar outage was experienced at the end of January. If you didn’t notice, that may be because it happened in the late evening and was relatively short-lived.
