That Startup Show: Can You Make A Difference And Make Profit?

Are we living in the age of conscious capitalism?

On this week’s That Startup Show, we are asking whether profit and empathy can co-exist and if businesses can be a viable solution to many of the world’s problems.

Brought to you by That Startup Show, Australia’s number one show about startup culture! Weekly episodes premiering on Gizmodo every Wednesday.

Hosts Rae Johnston and Ben Law explore those startups already on a social mission to help issues like population growth, environmental challenges and food scarcity.

Jeremy Heimans, CEO of Purpose and co-founder of Get Up, and Keep Cup founder Abigail Forsyth join the panel to discuss the challenges tech leaders face when stepping up to help the communities they operate in.

Girl Geek Academy guest correspondent Stephanie Chung also engages with the next generation students from Korowa, who are creating innovations for their ‘How To Stop Plastics In Our Oceans’ campaign.

Rae Johnston is featured in apparel from NT startup Magpie & Goose, which supports indigenous artists and designers.

Pitching their startups this week are:

  • Vollie co-founders Matthew Boyd and Tanya Dontas. Vollie is an online marketplace that connects skilled people to non-profits and charities for online volunteering.
  • CEO at Catalysr, Usman Iftikhar. Catalysr is a pre-accelerator for early stage startups, which runs intensive entrepreneurship programs for high-performing migrant and refugee entrepreneurs.
  • Allroundr co-founder Prasad Murthi. Allroundr is a location-based search platform for mobile users to search and contact tutors and experts in their area.

That Startup Show is sponsored by LauchVic, with additional support from the Department of Industry, Innovation & Science and Gizmodo. Community support comes from Sidekicker, Academy Xi, Girl Geek Academy, She Starts, Startmate, MAP Accelerator, QUTCEA and Blue Chilli.
