Looking for a good book? Look no further. We’re very proud to present Molly Tanzer’s Victorian fantasy novel Creatures of Will & Temper, which you can read the entirety of here. The only catch is that we’ll be serialising the novel in three parts – the second instalment will be published next Thursday, June 7, and the third the Thursday after that – at which point you’ll have a very good, complete and free book.
I’ve read the book, and I like it a lot (perhaps more notably, The Laundry Files‘ author Charles Stross and Girl Waits With Gun‘s Amy Stewart do as well).
It reads like a Victorian novel; it’s loosely inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Grey, and like much of Victorian literature, there’s a stateliness to it that keeps it prim and proper, even while there are demons lurking about. These earlier pages may seem a bit slow to some, but I can assure you that it’s well worth sticking with, because Creatures of Will & Temper has one of the most exciting, suspenseful final acts I’ve read in ages.
But I’m being rude! Let me allow Ms Tanzer the deserved honour of introducing the first instalment:

As you can see, cherished reader, Victorian London is both exactly as you thought it would be… and more than you could possibly imagine.
When we delve into Part Two, a portrait hangs gleaming in a studio in Chelsea, a beautiful memorial of a beautiful life; a sword hangs in a truly Damoclean manner in Curzon Street, teaching lessons to those who dare wield it… and a cigarette hangs from the lovely lower lip of our dear Lady Henry, giving off the essence of shag tobacco and diabolic ginger. What intrigues will be revealed as the sisters settle in? What will Evadne make of the fencing school she is about to visit? I shall say no more. While this is not a novel of virtue, patience is indeed required here. Only one short week, however! Check back for Part Two on June [7]. – MT
