Joel Kinnaman played Rick Flag, the career soldier tasked with corralling a bunch of supervillains into Suicide Squad‘s titular strike team. He saw the poorly received DC/WB superhero flick and agrees with a lot of viewers that the final third of the movie was the weakest part.

In an interview with Yahoo Movies UK, Kinnaman says that the more grounded main characters of the Squad didn’t mesh well against the third act’s large-scale supernatural threat:
When we asked Kinnaman what went wrong with the project, we got a fairly blunt, honest and funny response – ‘The third act!’
“It was a great set-up, great characters. I think when we do the second one I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a more grounded version of the film. The characters are so extreme it could be more effective if we saw less sorcery. I think the characters become more extreme if you see them in conjunction with real people.”
Like Kinnaman, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has talked about his own regrets with regard to the making of the movie. Ayer’s comments come from a different angle, but both men acknowledge the movie could’ve been better in different ways. Hopefully, this self-awareness will lead to a better outcome when production gets underway for Suicide Squad 2.
Last we saw, Kinnaman – who’s currently appearing in Netflix’s Altered Carbon – was getting in shape for the sequel with his co-stars. Suicide Squad 2 will be released some time in 2019.
