Video: The previous trailers for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One have been heavy on the Oasis. Why wouldn’t they be? It’s the virtual world of the film where literally anything is possible. But, in this latest look, those scenes are much more balanced with action in the real world. Which is pretty surprising.

In the original book by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One has a lot of scenes in reality but they’re by far outweighed by ones in the Oasis. However, this trailer certainly makes it seem as though Spielberg has shifted that at least a little, which is probably a good sign that he’s trying to keep humanity and character on an equal footing with the non-stop barrage of pop culture references.
That isn’t to say there isn’t a buttload of pop culture stuff in here. There’s the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, King Kong, and a drifting Back to the Future Delorean in a massive virtual battle. Hell, the trailer is set to a cover of “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka because the Oasis is basically the world’s chocolate factory. And yet, if this film does dial down the pop culture even just a little, it could be better received than the book. At least in theory.
We have a lot of thoughts on this film and property, which we’ll have more of in the coming weeks. For now, Ready Player One opens March 29.
