Co-created by Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan, Birthright is about a family devastated when their son goes missing, only for a man to return a year later claiming to be their full-grown son who was transported to another world. Despicable Me writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio will write the screenplay.
The project is part of Skybound’s first-look deal with Universal. It’s a production company co-founded by Kirkman of The Walking Dead fame, and he’ll produce along with David Alpert, Bryan Furst, Jeb Brody and Sean Furst.
“Birthright is a giant fantasy epic but at its core it’s a story about family, and I’m really excited that a creative team who values those same storytelling elements will be adapting Birthright,” Williamson said in a press release. “Andrei and I have put so much of ourselves into developing the Birthright comic and we know that Cinco, Ken, and the entire Skybound team will do the same as they adapt it for the big screen. I’ve been a big fan of Universal ever since I was a kid, and I’ll lose it when I see the Universal logo in front of the Birthright movie.”
With the deal just being announced, no release date has yet been set.
