Maybe There’s Hope For Apple’s Original Videos After All

It looks like Kristin Wiig will soon star in a half-hour comedy series. Produced by Reese Witherspoon’s company and inspired by the upcoming Curtis Sittenfeld short story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It, the new project actually sounds like it might be kind of great. And guess what? It’s an Apple series.

Apple, like every major tech company, desperately wants to make exclusive videos, ones it can then serve up to Apple customers through Apple products such as Apple TV. The only problem, so far, is that Apple really sucks at making videos. Its only two shows – Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke – are beyond bad.

But the latest news out of Tinseltown suggests that this could soon change. Kristen Wiig is great, and everybody mostly loves her. And she’ll also be an executive producer on the show. Hello Sunshine, that Reese Witherspoon company, sounds like its working on a good mission to promote female-driven stories. It’s also worth noting that Witherspoon’s previous production company, Pacific Standard, was behind huge Oscar-winning successes such as Gone Girl and Wild, as well as award-winning series like Big Little Lies. And to top it all off, former 30 Rock producer Colleen McGuinness is going to run the show. This Apple video effort is starting to sound pretty good.

Kristin Wiig and friends will be in the company of some very famous names at Apple Pictures, or whatever the company wants to call it. Apple also has plans for a show called Are You Sleeping, starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, that’s being described as a “morning show drama“. Ron Moore, the legend who resurrected Battlestar Galactica, will be making a space series called See. And as of this week, Apple is in a bidding war with HBO to get another sci-fi drama written by none other than J.J. Abrams.

These shows do not sound like they suck. Which makes sense. If money buys you anything in the entertainment business, Apple should already be the biggest studio on Earth. It’s been a slow start, but Apple’s programming might soon be getting really good – if you’re a fan of either dramas or space.
