New photos are out for the latest iteration of the classic (and public domain!) story of Robin Hood. The 2018 version, directed by Otto Bathurst, promises to be a “gritty” retelling of the traditional tale… complete with assault rifle-esque bows and Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham, whose wardrobe is straight out of a space opera.

The movie’s Twitter account has released a couple new photos from Robin Hood, the upcoming film starring Kingsman’s Taron Egerton as the titular fellow who robs from the rich and gives to the poor. Everything about this movie looks wild — no surprise, considering it shares many behind-the-scenes folk with last year’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

It appears to be a period piece, based on these behind-the-scenes photos showing cheesy-arse Crusades garb, but visually it’s all over the place. For example, Mendelsohn looks like he’s about to welcome the Tributes to the 74th annual Hunger Games. Then you’ve got Robin in an ascot, preaching to the masses in what might be humanity’s first steel mill?

Even the weaponry is getting a bizarre makeover for the age of cinema, with Robin Hood’s classic bow and arrow replaced by what essentially amounts to a semi-automatic. If this interview with Jamie Foxx, who plays Little John, is any indication, we’re about to see some serious shit on September 21.

“The way they shot it was crazy, it looks like you’re watching Zero Dark Thirty,” Foxx said. “We’re shooting with our bows, but they computer-generated it so it’s rapid-fire, almost like an AK. I saw that and was like ‘Oh, they ain’t ready for this.’”

I am indeed not ready for this.
