Everything You Need To Know About Tesla's New Electric Semi Truck

Elon Musk rolled up to a Tesla press event yesterday in an electric semi truck, unveiling his latest project to the world. The semi has been hotly anticipated since Musk first hinted at it last winter, and he's been hyping it up on Twitter this week, promising that the reveal would "blow your mind clear out of your skull and into an alternate dimension".

The semi truck is the latest addition to Musk's vision of an all-electric world, where cars, trucks and homes are all powered by clean energy.

What's up with this electric truck?

Well, it's a semi truck... but with a battery instead of diesel tank. It's automatic, and it has no petrol engine or transmission, so it should theoretically require less maintenance than a normal truck. "I can drive this thing and I have no idea how to drive a semi," said Musk.

It's also built on the bones of the Model 3 - there are two Model 3 engines driving each of the rear axles, Model 3-style press-in handles on the doors, and two Model 3 screens in the cab - so there's a lot of continuity between Tesla's cars and its new truck.

"We designed the Tesla truck to be more like a bullet," Musk said, comparing the vehicle to typical semi trucks. The Tesla semi truck has a 805km range and can go from 0-100km/h in five seconds (in 20 seconds while carrying 36,300kg). Musk did not reveal a price for the truck on stage, but claimed it would wind up costing 20 per cent less per mile than a diesel truck. Production of the truck will begin in the year 2019. "If you order now, you get your truck in two years," Musk said.

How luxe is the cab of the truck?

In keeping with Tesla's attention to design, the interior of the truck is faaancy. The cab has full standing room and the driver's seat is positioned in the centre (rather than off to the left), which is intended to provide better visibility. The seat is flanked on either side by touch screens that provide blind spot monitoring and navigation.

Musk told Rolling Stone recently that some of the truck's luxury features might actually hurt sales. "Probably no one will buy it because of this," he joked, referencing what the magazine called "a driver-comfort feature".

"But if you're going to make a product, make it beautiful. Even if it doesn't affect sales, I want it to be beautiful," he added.

But the interior layout isn't just about driver comfort - the truck also comes with tracking features to be used by a fleet manager for routing, monitoring and scheduling.

Is there any of Tesla's self-driving tech in it?

Yup. The truck isn't fully autonomous, but it does have Tesla's Enhanced Autopilot system, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane detection and lane departure warnings.

The truck has a few other automated safety features, too. Exterior cameras help cut down on blind spots and aid with object detection. It also comes equipped with sensors that can detect instability and adjust each wheel individually to prevent jackknifing. "Jackknifing is impossible. The worst nightmare is gone - gone - with this truck," said Musk.

'Thermo nuclear explosion-proof glass'

On stage, Musk boasted about the truck's reliability and durability. He guaranteed the semi truck will not break down for a million miles. "The truck will actually anticipate when it needs maintenance and inform you ahead of time," said Musk, after touting the durability of the "armour glass" windshield.

Is the Supercharger network going to expand?

Musk boasts that its semi has 644km of range after 30 min of charging. "By the time you are done with your break, the truck is ready to go. You will not be waiting for your truck to charge," he said.

But one of the big questions hanging over this launch is how an entire fleet of electric trucks would charge. Tesla currently has over 2000 Supercharger stations, which can power up a Model S in less than an hour. But it isn't clear if that network could support the addition of thousands of trucks.

The company is currently working to expand its Supercharger network, so hopefully there will be enough stations to accommodate the trucks by the time they start showing up on the road.

    Could be useful here in Australia where we rely on trucks for lots of goods transportation. Would be interesting to see how it performs and how much it costs vs maintenance and diesel prices over time. If it ever eventuates, of course.

      True, however, there may have to be design changes. I wrote some software years ago for a large logistics company here in Aus. I was in the workshop for a while, and learned that Kenwoth trucks, here in Aus, are built far more sturdier than their US counterparts. The fibreglass cabs are much thicker, and the chassis etc has extra support. The reason... Aus roads are basically shite compared to the US, and if you ran a US truck here in Aus it wouldn't last as long. I don't think this will be a huge challenge for Tesla, but certainly something to take into consideration.

    So it's pretty much got the Navitron Autodrive System??

      I didn't hear him mention "Autonomous" once in the speech. In fact he went to great pains to talk about drivers and making it a great & safe experience for them.

        Yeah, cos there's a conspiracy where the truck drivers don't want you to know about the Navitron Autodrive System. Have you seen the documentary about it on The Simpsons?

    TL:DR, the claims Musk is making are actually impossible to deliver - ESPECIALLY the solar-powered charging stations.

      Curious, can you name one thing he's failed to achieve? I fully expect you to bang again and again about things that aren't anywhere near ready yet like Hyperloop or Mars but seriously, he always proves the naysayers and shorters wrong. Nothing SpaceX or Tesla has set out to achieve has ended in failure. Why would they start now?

        Well he does have to fail some time! BUT there is no reason for it to be on this. The Batteries, the motors the Autopilot are now all proven tech. The Model S was a much bigger step.

    What interests me is there was no Autonomous talk. That will be a huge cost saving. I guess he was just sticking to 2019 scenarios and costs. By all accounts it will be the best truck ever to drive. Built in Anti jackknifing! It will even call the emergency services if you become unconscious and slow the truck down to a stop! Once again it leaves you thinking, why has nobody done this before. These US trucks like Kenworth & Freightliner has done such little innovating over the last 50's I guess they are just ripe for disruption.

    So we have a silent truck that accelerates 0-100 in 5 seconds!!

      You mean speed limited to 100km, the quoted acceleration target, like almost all other trucks on Aussie roads? K.

    I see these being run off the road by convoys of disgruntled old-school truckers - a la The Simpsons.
